Reducing Waste at the Source: Small Actions That Make a Big Difference

At PURE, waste reduction isn't just an initiative we highlight one week a year. It's a commitment that guides our decisions every single day. What if reducing waste started long before we even had something to throw away We're fortunate to oversee several stages of our production process, from product design and manufacturing in our own facility to distribution. This hands-on approach allows us to think differently, eliminate unnecessary steps, and implement practical solutions to reduce our environmental footprint. Because the best waste is often the waste we never create in the first place. 1. Eco-Design Did you know that up to 80% of a product's environmental impacts can be determined during its design phase? We carefully consider every detail before a product even reaches store shelves. The choice of ingredients, containers, labels, and packaging materials is an integral part of our eco-design approach. Our transparent bottles: a thoughtful choice to make them easier to identify during sorting and support recycling. They also make bulk refilling easier by allowing you to see the fill level. Our water-resistant labels: designed to withstand repeated refills and remain on containers throughout their reuse. Products designed for bulk refilling: why buy a new bottle when the one you already have can last for years? With our at-home bulk formats and network of refill stations, we encourage reusing containers rather than replacing them. A family can use approximately 60 bottles of 500 mL per year. Giving cardboard a second life: even when preparing your orders, we look for ways to reduce waste. Rather than systematically using new packing materials, we reuse our cardboard and turn it into protective cushioning for our shipping boxes. A simple way to give a resource we already have a second life! 2. The same container can therefore be used multiple times rather than being systematically replaced. This approach allows us to extend the lifespan of our containers and reduce the need for new packaging. Every year, our PURE bulk refill network helps prevent the use of approximately 3 million bottles. It's proof that small habits, repeated on a large scale, can make a significant impact. 4. Bulk Refilling at Home and at Work What if the last bottle of soap you ever bought was the one you already own? With our 10-litre formats, bulk refilling at home becomes a simple way to reduce packaging while always keeping your favourite products on hand. Keep your bottles, refill them as needed, and avoid accumulating unnecessary small containers. Less plastic: a 10-litre format reduces the amount of plastic used by approximately 90% compared to purchasing equivalent quantities in smaller formats. Less transportation: larger formats help reduce trips to restock and minimize packaging. Creating a new product doesn’t begin with its formula alone. Long before it reaches the market, we consider its entire life cycle: how it will be used, its packaging, its transportation, and what will happen to the container once the product is finished if it isn’t refilled locally. That’s what ecodesign is all about: considering a product’s impact from the very beginning rather than looking for solutions once it already exists. Because reducing waste doesn’t start at the recycling bin. It starts at the design table. πŸ€“   Packaging designed differently We considered every component to create packaging that is practical, durable, and adapted to our bulk refill model. One of the unique features of the new container is built directly into its lid: the measuring cup needed to use the product is integrated right into it. There’s no need to add a separate scoop or accessory inside the packaging. That means one less component to produce, transport, and eventually dispose of. The container was also designed to be kept and refilled locally in bulk. Once your powder is finished, the goal isn’t necessarily to replace the packaging, but to keep using it. That’s exactly the kind of approach we want to encourage at PURE: buy the container once, then refill it again and again. Our powders: essential raw materials and more Long before lengthy ingredient lists and specialized products for every task, our grandmothers already relied on simple, versatile raw materials to care for their homes and laundry. We love getting back to that simplicity: carefully selected ingredients, a clear purpose, and just what’s needed to get the job done. Because sometimes, innovation also means getting back to basics. Stripping Powder, for brighter whitesThe perfect ally for clothing and textiles that need a boost, whether whites or colours. It helps remove stubborn stains, brighten whites, and deep-clean fibres. We would therefore like to thank Jimmy Bouchard and the SociΓ©tΓ© VIA team for their invaluable support throughout our reflection process, as they do with each of our projects. Their expertise allowed us to better understand the different components of our packaging and make more informed decisions, particularly when considering how it will be sorted and what will happen to it at the end of its life. Because packaging may look simple when it reaches a store shelf, but many decisions are made behind the scenes. Despite its smooth, colourful finish, the tube is easily recognized by sorting equipment as cardboard.
